3 Strategies for Parents to DE-Stress

According to the American Psychological Association, 69% of parents say that the stress they feel does not affect their children. Unfortunately, the data shows that only 14% of those children said their parent's stress did not affect them.

If you're like just about every other parent in America, you're balancing a lot. Odds are, you're stressed out of your mind. 

The good news is, you're in good company. The bad news is, according to the APA, your stress could be harming your kids as much as it's harming you.

So how do you eliminate parental stress? Here are 3 effective strategies you may not have considered.

1. Don't Go it Alone

The plain hard truth is: parenting is hard.

Add to it a stressful full-time job, other family relationships, staying healthy, housework, and an endless list of other to-dos, and you've got a recipe for feeling overwhelmed.

As one wise woman once said, "Women wear many hats, but it is impossible, and unnecessary, to wear them all at once."

While the same can absolutely be said for fathers, the point is, you don't need to balance everything at once. You also don't need to try and do everything yourself.

Relieve parental stress by developing a solid support system.

Don't be ashamed to ask for help from others. A spouse, significant other, grandparent, friend, or babysitter, lean on other responsible adults to help you.

2. Simplify

Too many parents feel pressure to dress their kids in the latest trends, enroll them in the finest preschools, and teach them their ABCs before they're even 3 years old.   

The irony is, one of the best things you can do to relieve yourself and your children from undue stress is to simplify.

One of the most valuable things you can offer your child, besides love, is a sense of security and calm. Try making a list of the essential things you need to do every day. 

This should include things that are essential for your children's health and happiness, but also for yourself.

If something isn't vital to you and your family's well-being, cut it loose. When it comes to finding peace and fulfillment in parenting, sometimes less is more.

3. Get Moving

As an over-worked, sleepless parent, sometimes the last thing you want to do is get exercise. But, if you can drum up the energy to get your bum off the couch and stick the baby in a stroller for a walk, the benefits are mighty.

It's a scientific fact, proven many times over, that exercise reduces stress. It works in your body to eliminate stressor hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Exercise also releases relaxing hormones like endorphins. These hormones are natural pain killers and elevate moods.

Sometimes the most stress-reducing thing may sound the most daunting. But, in the long-run, regular exercise is a guaranteed way to relieve stress from your day.
